Why Meta rejected my template, and other template errors
The messages you may see when creating or sending a template, and what to change.
Updated 29 October 2026
- "Template name must be lowercase with underscores": use only a-z, 0-9 and _.
- "Name and Body text are required": both fields are empty or missing.
- "Meta needs a sample file to review a media template": an Image, Video or Document header needs a sample. Paste a URL or upload a file.
- "Could not upload the sample image to Meta: …": the sample could not be uploaded. Try a JPG or PNG under 5 MB.
- "Failed to create template in Meta: …": the rest of the message is Meta’s own reason, for example "Sample value missing" or a body that starts with a parameter.
- Button messages: a label must be 25 characters or fewer, a website link must start with https:// and cannot contain a variable, a phone number needs the country code, and only one call button is allowed.
- "This template has a button type the CRM cannot edit yet (coupon, OTP or flow). Edit it in WhatsApp Manager.": those button types are managed in WhatsApp Manager.
- "WhatsApp configuration incomplete": no number is connected. Connect one in Settings › Channels first.
When the status is "Rejected"
Open the template with the pencil icon, change what Meta objected to, and submit it again; Meta reviews it once more. The category can still be changed on a template that is not approved.
